When BOP Applies
The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator applies to federal inmates, not routine Wilcox County jail bookings or Alabama state prisoners. BOP records cover federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A federal record may show Released or Not in BOP Custody with no facility location and a release date. That means the person is no longer in BOP custody, but BOP cautions that the person may still be in another correctional or criminal-justice system or on supervision.
